Assured, certified and sustainable quality
Good reinforcing steel is a genuine quality product. Provided it is seamlessly controlled from the raw material to the finished product. Marienhütte applies the highest quality criteria throughout the entire manufacturing process, guaranteeing a perfect product.
How is reinforcing steel made?
No reinforcing steel without old iron. Scrap iron is the most important raw material required for the production of reinforcing steel. Together with lime, carbon, oxygen and a lot of electrical energy, it is melted down at high speed. The electric arc furnace in which this takes place can produce 40 tons in 40 minutes. The steel, which is resolidified into a so-called rebar billet, then passes through several rolling stands; with each rolling stand it becomes longer and thinner. Heat treatment takes place in the water box before the finished reinforcing steel cools down as a "bar" or is coiled up as a "hot ring".
Assured quality:
right from the start
The content determines the quality - this is no different for reinforcing steel than for any other conventional product. For this reason, we leave nothing to chance when it comes to scrap: we systematically check it to see whether it meets all the criteria defined in the European scrap type list. Sophisticated calculation models then optimize the actual melting process. The resulting product - the melt - is subjected to a precise chemical analysis. In addition, we systematically check the surface geometry and mechanical properties of our products, i.e. the strength and ductility - for each individual batch.
Certifications
Certified quality: ISO 9001, 14001
Delivering quality is important. Maintaining quality over a long period of time is even more important. That's why we have our products and processes regularly inspected in accordance with the strict requirements
of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. And these are not the only checks. The regulatory authorities in our customers' countries inspect our products at regular intervals in external quality audits lasting several days.
Sustainable quality: SustSteel®
The reinforcing steel from Marienhütte bears the SustSteel® label. It monitors the sustainability of production and is a visible seal of quality. The Europe-wide SustSteel® process uses 22 key figures to evaluate the performance of companies. In addition to economic and ecological aspects, social criteria such as occupational safety and employee turnover are also taken into account. Marienhütte is one of the first companies in Europe to be awarded the SustSteel® label.
